POMPEI

HOUSES & SHOPS

On the afternoon of December 24th, we took a bus from naples to Pompei to the ruins of the city destroyed by Vesuvius in 79AD. The bus passes Vesuvius on the way and it's quite visible from Pompei. Pompei is amazing - and very large - acres of streets in a grid pattern and hundreds of houses and shops. The houses were built in the classic Roman form with small living, dining and bedrooms surrounding a central, open, atrium. Many had a small pool in the center of the atrium lined with marble or tiles. Shops were in the front wall of the house along the road.
The large courtyard of a temple.
Corner tavern - there were many.
Another tavern - more elegant style. Inside a large house with tile floors in the atrium.
The decorations are mosaic not painting.
Two story house. The row of holes would have held wooden posts across the ceiling to form a floor above.
Brick columns.
This must have been a bakery or a eatery since there is such a large oven.
Well preserved atrium of a large house.
