Rhodes Town
Rhodes is an ancient city that has been ruled by each of the major civilizations through the centuries and each left its mark. It seems walls and buildings and roads were never knocked down or dug up; the inhabitants merely added a facade, a tower, a wall. Makes for interesting walks. The people were very friendly and we just wandered around by ourselves. We highly recommend Rhodes for a visit.
Another "You are here" moment. Town center. Notice the cafe built out from the ancient city wall.
Another example of utilizing the existing stone wall.
This was a courtyard in front of a cafe (to the right). Down the steps behind the camels (fake), was a creche.
Ruin of a church.
And this is the creche. Real wood, cardboard cutout people.
A muslim library is across the street from this mosque. This is its courtyard.
Mosque of Suliman the Magnificent which is undergoing major renovation due to an earthquake in the 1990s.
Looking in the library's window.
A government building. The cannon balls were ones shot at Rhodes.
Walking up the hill towards the Grand Palace, we passed through the Street of the Knights where they used to live.
A window on the Street of the Knights. Cats were everywhere in Greece. Old door, old wall.
Somebody's house?
Typical doorway with typical cat.
Neighborhood alley.
Going home.
