NetWare goes virtual

Well, it's finally happened. NetWare is now virtual and Linux based. According to a story in The INQUIRER, Open Enterprise Server (OES) 2 was released yesterday "...has the NetWare operating system kernel, NetWare 6.5 SP7, running on top of the Xen hypervisor."

To say that NetWare is now merely a shadow of its former self is both trite, and true.

Virtual or not, NetWare 6.5 SP7 is still NetWare. Para-virtualized NW6.5 SP7 will "future proof" NetWare until Novell pulls the plug on support in 2015. Dell, HP and IBM will eventually stop certifying NW6.5 on their new server hardware and writing driver support. OES2 NetWare as a para-virtualized OS on OES2 SLES10 SP1 will not directly access the hardware.

Also, NetWare 6.5 SP7 will be the last version of NetWare that will install on bare metal.

Anyone with a substantial investment in NetWare NLM based services will be able to run them for many years to come.
