Paris Getaway
Cheap fares from Austin to Paris! How could we pass it up? We left on February 28th and returned on March 6th and crammed as much as possible in between. Some places we visited were: Les Invalides; The Louvre; Sainte-Chapelle; Le Conciergerie; the Picasso Erotique exhibit; the Grande Arche in La Defense. Start a tour from any of these pictures.
The Grande Arche. Our hotel was just behind. This newly constructed area is called La Defense and is west of Paris' center. Very modern office buildings, residences, and shops. We visited the Louvre a couple of times because some exhibits are only open on some days.
The Hotel des Invalides was constructed by Louis XIV as a retirement home for soldiers - and it still is. In the center of the complex is the Dome Church which became the final resting place of notable military men including Napoleon Bonapart. This is the inside of the dome.
The Jeu de Paume gallery was the site of a controversial exhibit of Picasso's erotic art - so we had to go see it. Here's Rodin in his garden. The Rodin Museum is located in the house where he lived while sculpting into his old age.
The Conciergerie was originally built as a palace but became a prison in the 14th century.
Sainte-Chapelle was finished in 1248 by St. Louis to house the Crown of Thorns.
