Money-grubbing Pinko! My latest Wired Windows column in Network World took issue with the myriad of people attacking the RIAA for suing people who infringed their property rights. Much hate mail to me ensued, including some written in (almost) complete sentences. I can't reproduce most of it here, because I'd like to keep this site rated PG or better, but one sputtering airhead did catch my fancy with this:"#^%% you, the riaa #^&&ing sucks, you commie mother#^&&er!" Evidently the communists are big defenders of property rights. Who knew? Thursday, October 02, 2003
Blaming the victimIn what has to be one of the dumbest court cases to come along in years, an LA lawyer is attempting a class action suit which holds Microsoft responsible for worm holes and related security problems. If this is successful, I'll have to think about suing Citicorp for "allowing" bank robberies! Its not aqs if you had to buy Windows, Mr. lawyer! Wednesday, October 01, 2003
The truth, or a reasonable facsimile, is out there. Somewhere. In what he calls an open-source letter, former Novell executive Joe Firmage details the internal battles that led to the sale of the licensing rights for Unix to SCO and how that decision is now roiling the Linux market. Last we heard of old Joe, he'd been booted out of USWeb (a company he founded) to pursue his dream of uncovering the truth about UFOs (i.e., he wants to find flying saucers). We need to get Chris Carter (who created the X-files) to work on a script! Just imagine what he could do with Joe "Fox Mulder" Firmage with Darl MacBride as, well, any one of the bad guys. Do you suppose we could talk HP's Carly Fiorina into the role of Firmage's partner?
